Executing a handoff follows the same flow as pitching the ball so I won’t belabor the point by repeating that article with slightly different screenshots. Instead, I’ll tell you how handing the ball off is different from pitching the ball.
Handoff Playart
First, the playart for a handoff is different from that of a pitch. Here’s a short pitch from quarterback to halfback:

The only difference is the playart used to represent the ball changing hands.
In fact, you can create a handoff with waypoints well outside the bounds of what makes sense for a handoff and the play editor will let you do it:
